Transgender History (Second Edition) cover

Transgender History (Second Edition)

Transgender History by Susan Stryker is one of the best accounts of trans history that I’ve read. Thoroughly researched and detailed, though never inaccessible, it’s a book that really treats trans lives and experiences as a vital part of history. Stryker makes fascinating connections between individual lives and larger historical movements across all sorts of areas, from psychology to law, medicine to politics. This is a US-focused book, but would make for fascinating reading for anyone, and includes a great list of suggested reading material too.

Person Unlimited cover

Person Unlimited

I read Dean Atta’s Person Unlimited in a day and found it a really moving memoir. It’s a raw and beautiful account of the ways experience can impact and shape us, and the format of taking different body parts as jumping-off points for exploration works really well. Exploring queerness, race, and many other areas of his life, Atta takes complex topics, difficult experiences, and explores them with vulnerability and nuance, and you just want to keep reading.

Almost Life

Deeply immersive and moving, Almost Life tells of two women who meet by chance, and yet their passion and connection ripples through the rest of their lives. KMH writes with such clarity and beauty that it's easy to become thoroughly entwined with Laure and Erica through their hopes, friendships, heartbreaks, and the loves and futures that they come so close to grasping.

Rose/House

Rose/House is a brief but lingering fever dream of a novella. Surrounding the mysterious death of the house's designer/owner, architecture and technology combine to make a distinctly unsettling gothic mansion, haunted by an omnipresent AI. When a student of the deceased returns to Rose House to search for answers, alongside a sceptical police officer, they find horrifying secrets amongst the petals.

Rejection cover

Rejection

A vicious little book. Rejection is a novel-in-stories written in the clearest, neatest possible sentences: it's just that those sentences contain some very nasty social commentary at the expense of the book's interlocking cast of risible characters. Great, disgusting fun.

Ordinary Saints

There's nothing quite like a great first line, and Ní Mhaoileoin truly knows how to deliver. From the moment we're introduced to Jay and the complex relationships she has with her family, faith, and queerness, I was hooked. This book expertly toes the line between humour and sincerity, all the while building an incredible plot. This is the lesbian catholic guilt final boss of your dreams.

What Am I, A Deer? cover

What Am I, A Deer?

The translator Polly Barton's first foray into fiction is nonetheless about translation, in that we are always translating ourselves into something comprehensible for others to understand. Following a translator at a Frankfurt video game company as she delves headfirst into an infatuation with a man she has never spoken to, Barton's novel questions heteronormative patterns of desire, and also why karaoke is one of the most freeing experiences a person can have.

The Silver Book cover

The Silver Book

Set in the atmospheric world of 1970s Italian cinema, Olivia Laing's The Silver Book opens up a small story of love, performance and betrayal into something bigger. Two men meet by accident, a young English artist and a renowned Cinecittà designer working on films for Fellini and Pasolini – their sweeping love affair will have consequences far beyond their own lives. I found the ending incredibly moving, when I realised what had been happening underneath the surface all along.

In Youth is Pleasure cover

In Youth is Pleasure

It's interwar Britain and Orvil Pym, 15 years old, briefly free from his vicious boarding school, is making the most of his summer holiday in his own freaky manner. This book is demented, whimsical, chock-full of trinkets, and laced with anger and pain.

The Charioteer cover

The Charioteer

While recovering in an army hospital, young WWII vet Laurie finds himself romantically torn between a Quaker conscientious objector and the expelled prefect hero of his school years, Ralph, now a fellow injured soldier. Midcentury lesbian icon Mary Renault seems to actually hate gay men, with evil-minded, Muriel Spark-like relish. I don't know if she intended The Charioteer as a dark comedy, but it's the funniest book I read last year. I can't believe it exists.

After Sappho cover

After Sappho

In Selby Wynn Schwartz' novel, the lives of lesbian and queer women interlace at the turn of the 20th century, as they meet each other, inspire each other, love each other. After Sappho pays homage to notable women artists and writers who carved a space and fought for the right to live their own lives through war, fascism and the criminalisation of homosexuality. It's unconventional, luminous and inspired!

Is This a Cry for Help? cover

Is This a Cry for Help?

When librarian Darcy hears about her ex-boyfriend's sudden death, she experiences a mental health crisis necessitating an extended break from work. When she's finally ready to return, her wife Joy is called away to help with a family issue so Darcy is left to deal with the (increasingly difficult) library patrons on her own. This book is a searing reflection of contemporary social issues, complex relationship dynamics, and how we can health and grow. It is a beautiful portrait of a marriage and life built together, as well a deeply empathetic examination of the realities of life-long mental health conditions.

To the Moon and Back cover

To the Moon and Back

It's hard to describe without spoiling this beautiful, expansive novel. Its a story about family, community, identity, and passions. We follow the intersecting lives of three women over decades and across continents, watching them grow and impact each others lives. Steph is relentlessly pursuing her dream of becoming the first Cherokee astronaut. Her younger sister Kayla develops her artistic talents and becomes politically active. Steph's college girlfriend Della is working through the complex feelings of her indigenous roots and trying to find a community. I love this book for its heart, social commentary, and fun readability despite the heavier topics.
