The WTO is facing an unprecedented crisis, one that threatens to critically erode its relevance and destabilize global trade. Some member states have become increasingly distrustful of other WTO members, invoking trade-restrictive measures in the name of economic security. Petros C. Mavroidis's new book provides insight into current international trade, national security, and environmental challenges facing the world community, of which the World Trade Organization (WTO) is at the epicenter. Even if the WTO overcame its current crisis, its adjudication branch is insufficiently equipped to address the aforementioned challenges and the WTO contract itself is in dire need of updating. Yet, as Mavroidis argues, ensuring the survival of the WTO is crucial for rebuilding the trust of the global trading community. In this direction, Mavroidis offers concrete proposals toward improving the function of the WTO and reigniting global collaboration.
Industrial Policy, National Security, and the Perilous Plight of the WTO, should be required reading for trade experts and others trying to make sense of trade policy today. It tells the history of the current system, offers deep knowledge of World Trade Organization(WTO) legal structures and case law, and presents a sweeping account of how global trade and geopolitics interact. * Elizabeth Van Heuvelen, Finance and Development *
Combining historical context, legal rigour, and policy acuity, Mavroidis offers both a compelling critique of the WTO's current crisis and a principled roadmap for its renewal. At a time when the international economic order is at a crossroads, this book serves as a critical guide for navigating the challenges ahead. * Han-Wei LIU, Asian Journal of International Law *
Building upon professionalism and pragmatism, Mavroidis' book definitely worths reading for both academics and practitioners in the field of global trade governance. * Chenxi Wang, Asian Journal of WTO & International Health Law and Policy *
As an eminent trade lawyer and legal scholar, Professor Mavroidis leverages his expertise in international trade law to present a comprehensive analysis of the challenges facing the WTO. He analyses the historical implications of the strategiccompetition, the defects of the existing legal framework and the significance of the WTO Kindleberger Trap. Most importantly, the work proposes a promising WTO reform strategy for policymakers, practitioners and legal scholars to contemplate. The author invites readers to not only reflect on the root cause of the current WTO crisis but also to renew their faith in multilateral cooperation and their hope for the future of the WTO, looking to the EU as the instigator of this renewal. * Hae Bin Oh, International and Comparative Law Quarterly *
It is an open question how much law still exists in international trade or if enough support remains to maintain a rule based system among major economies. Mavroidis's book provides an exceptionally good lens to examine these issues, and the author provides a masterful and nuanced analysis of the history of trade law as well as current and future challenges. * Rachel Brewster, The American Journal of International Law *
In Industrial Policy, National Security, and the Perilous Plight of the WTO, Petros Mavroidis provides a penetrating analysis of how the convergence of industrial policy and economic security is reshaping international trade and exposing the growing limits of the WTO framework. ... His account is at once diagnostic and prescriptive, and it leaves little doubt as to the stakes of institutional renewal. * Leonardo Borlini, Department of Legal Studies/Institute of European Policymaking (IEP), University Bocconi *
