Most of the innovative and exciting work done by East Asian pragmaticians on their languages, past and present alike, is written and published in local languages. As a result, research published in and about a particular East Asian language has been largely unavailable to those who do not speak the language.
The contributors seek to present a comprehensive survey of existing outputs of pragmatics research on three major East Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese and Korean). The survey concentrates on a number of core pragmatic topics such as speech acts, deixis, discourse markers, conversation analysis, discourse analysis, and face/(im)politeness. To complement and compare with the picture of research work published in the local languages, the volume also includes a survey of internationally published, English-mediated articles and books studying the regional languages or contrasting them with other languages.
A rivetting discourse on pragmatics research, it will be a valuable read for students and scholars alike.
"This edited volume, by Xinren Chen and Doreen Wu, represents a unique, original and comprehensive contribution to the state-of-the-art in pragmatic research in East Asia, an exciting field that has seen unprecedented growth in recent years. It brings together experts in pragmatics in East Asia , revealing exciting Commonalities and Variations in East Asian pragmatic research agendas, disciplines, methods and findings.”---Winnie Cheng, former Professor, Department of English, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
"The systematicity with which Xinren Chen and Doreen Wu have collected this multi-authored overview of pragmatic research in and on the three major East Asian languages, turns it into an essential resource for anyone eager to learn about or to participate in it. The book may constitute, furthermore, a unique testimony of a meeting ground of western and eastern academic traditions; thus it is not only about pragmatics, it is intercultural pragmatics in practice."---Jef Verschueren, Emeritus Professor of Linguistics, University of Antwerp, Belgium, Secretary General, International Pragmatics Association
