Àbadakone | Continuous Fire | Feu continuel

Originally published to accompany the second contemporary international Indigenous art exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada in 2019, Àbadakone | Continuous Fire | Feu continuel taps into the global pulse of Indigenous artistic production. It builds on themes of continuity, activation, and relatedness, exploring the creativity, concerns, and vitality of Indigenous art from virtually every continent.

Àbadakone features work by more than 70 contemporary Indigenous artists identifying with almost 40 Indigenous nations, ethnicities, and tribal affiliations across Turtle Island and beyond, including Anishinaabe artist Rebecca Belmore, Maya-Tz’utujil artist Manuel Chavajay, and Hlubi artist Siwa Mgoboza. These stunning works are accompanied by major essays by artists and curators, covering topics as diverse as the curatorial methodology behind the exhibitions, Indigenous performance art, African art and Indigeneity, and the intersection of Indigenous art and global art history narratives in an age of post-colonialism and decolonization.

Publié d’abord à l’occasion de la deuxième Exposition internationale d’art indigène contemporain au Musée des beaux-arts du Canada, en 2019, Àbadakone | Continuous Fire | Feu continuel reflète le dynamisme de la production artistique autochtone à l’échelle internationale. L’ouvrage exploite des thèmes comme la continuité, l’activation et la connectivité, et met en valeur la créativité, les questionnements et la vitalité de l’art indigène de tous les continents, ou presque.

Àbadakone propose des œuvres de plus de 70 artistes autochtones contemporains représentant près de 40 nations, ethnicités et affiliations tribales, de l’île de la Tortue et d’ailleurs. Entre autres : Rebecca Belmore, artiste anishinaabe, Manuel Chavajay, du peuple maya-tz’utujil, et Siwa Mgoboza, du groupe ethnique hlubi. Ces œuvres remarquables s’accompagnent d’essais fouillés, de la part d’artistes et de conservateurs, sur des sujets allant de la méthodologie de la conversation et de l’exposition à l’art performance autochtone, en passant par l’art africain, l’indigénéité et l’intersection entre les récits que portent l’histoire de l’art autochtone et celle de l’art global, à l’ère du postcolonialisme et de la décolonisation.
