The New Companion to Urban Regeneration provides a critical overview of the meaning and relevance of urban regeneration as a policy and practice in contemporary cities across the globe.
Section I examines how urban regeneration has evolved, both as a practice and as a concept, in the decades since it took its current form. Section II shows how institutional path dependency, the gap between state narratives and regeneration outcomes, and the importance of scale and urban governance are not simply features of particular national contexts, but structural dimensions of regeneration that any adequate framework needs to address. Section III turns to how regeneration is delivered: through which governance arrangements and financial architectures, by which actors, and with what consequences for the communities most affected. Section IV examines new and emerging forms of urban decline, including those produced by regeneration itself, which existing frameworks are often poorly equipped to understand or address. Section V looks forward, developing frameworks for thinking about what urban regeneration might become, rather than simply documenting what it has been.
Bringing together contributions from leading voices in the field, and from both the Global North, Souths and East, the volume offers an essential resource for students, academics, practitioners and policymakers.
“The New Companion to Urban Regeneration offers a timely and genuinely international reassessment of a field undergoing significant change. Bringing together critical perspectives on financialization, inequality, ecological pressures and new forms of governance, it demonstrates why urban regeneration cannot be understood through a single model. The volume will be a valuable resource for scholars, students and practitioners seeking to understand both the limitations of established approaches and the possibilities for more context-sensitive and socially just forms of regeneration.”
Tuna Taşan-Kok, Professor of Urban Governance and Planning, Amsterdam Institute of Social Science Research, University of Amsterdam
“Urban regeneration today calls for more than renewal—it calls for new ways of thinking about how cities evolve, adapt, and transform. This Companion brings together diverse perspectives to challenge established paradigms and explore new frameworks for urban transformation, connecting social change with spatial and architectural thinking. It is a timely and thought-provoking contribution for those seeking more adaptive, inclusive, and forward-looking approaches to the future of our cities.”
Philip F. Yuan, Dean and Professor, College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University
“On a critical, perennial subject that has animated a multitude of studies with varying tenets, this richly informed volume brings together an international group of scholars to analyze key concepts, debates, and realities on the ground. Its focus is ambitious and fine-grained at the same time, profiling urban regeneration taking place at different scales, today and in the past, in cities large and small. A valuable resource for anyone interested in urban and planning studies.”
