Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy cover

This new edition of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy: Distinctive Features (MBCT) provides a concise, straightforward overview of MBCT, fully updated to integrate the changes that have evolved in MBCT and broader mindfulness field.

The scope of MBCT practice has spread beyond clinical contexts into a range of other settings including workplace and community contexts. Further there has been an expanding recognition of the social context within which MBCT is delivered, and with this a broadening of understanding of the personal and social drivers of depression. This requires MBCT teachers to build their understandings of trauma and issues related to equity, inclusion and diversity and to integrate these into both the content and process of the delivery of the sessions.

This book provides a basis for understanding the key theoretical and practical features of MBCT and retains its accessible and easy-to-use format that made the first edition so popular, with 30 distinctive features that characterise the approach.

‘It is a great pleasure and honour for me to recommend the third edition of this wonderful book about MBCT. It is worthwhile for both scientists and practitioners, and to those who are more experienced or new to the field. I have known Rebecca Crane and Clara Strauss for many years and admire them greatly for their important work on the integrity of mindfulness-based interventions, competency of teachers, developing innovative delivery formats and assessing their impact. Rebecca herself is one of the most competent mindfulness teachers I know, with her warm and non-judgmental attitude. Wonderful to see that she has been complemented for this new edition by the practical and thorough approach of Clara Strauss. It is a privilege to be able to delve into and particularly use the third edition of this handbook during our teaching. After all, not only our clients but also teachers should keep learning and developing!’

‘The authors have distilled years of experience in teaching MBCT and her deep understanding of MBCT into simple and accessible language. Held in a clear structure, the book is rich in both theoretical and practical details. A real gem for both beginners interested in MBCT and seasoned MBCT teachers.’

‘Any treatment in its 3rd decade will be subject to revision and adaptation demanded by the times, and MBCT is no exception. In this updated and user-friendly edition, Crane and Strauss provide a discerning and clinically wise foundation grounded in MBCT’s core principles that, simultaneously, allows therapists to embrace new MBCT practice elements and enrich its delivery to patients.’

Zindel Segal Ph.D.,is Distinguished Professor of Psychology in Mood Disorders at the University of Toronto - Scarborough. He a co-developer, along with Williams and Teasdale of Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy and has published a number of studies that have helped to establish the clinical efficacy of this intervention.

'Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy: Essential Features is in its third edition for a very good reason. Since it first appeared in 2008, it has been a seminal text in the field — and this new edition demonstrates exactly why. Rebecca Crane, joined here by Clara Strauss, has produced an extraordinary distillation of 25 years of research on MBCT: a genuine translational success story, told by two of the most respected and authoritative voices in the field.

What makes this book so valuable is the combination of coherence, succinctness, and scope. Rather than a deep dive into any single domain, it offers a reliable, well-organised overview of everything that matters — the rationale and background, the research evidence, the pedagogy, the routes to becoming an MBCT teacher, and the more recent and promising ways of making MBCT for depression more accessible to those who need it most. That breadth, held together with such clarity and economy, is precisely what makes it the book to reach for first. For anyone teaching, training, or seeking to understand MBCT more deeply, it is difficult to imagine a more complete or dependable guide.

All three editions sit on a small shelf next to my desk — alongside a carefully a select set of seminal books on MBCT — as constant source materials. I suspect for all those interested in MBCT it would assume a similar place on their bookshelves.'
