The new fourth edition of this popular book has been written to help international students of business and economics succeed in writing essays, reports and other tasks for their English-language academic courses. This new edition has been completely revised, updated and restructured to make it even easier to use, both in the classroom with a teacher and also for self-study and reference.
The book consists of three parts, comprising a total of 29 units:
- The Writing Process and Writing Skills
- Elements of Writing
- Writing Models
The first part explains and practises every stage of writing an academic paper, from choosing the best sources, reading and note-making, through to referencing and proofreading. These stages are supported by relevant explanations of critical writing skills, so that, for instance, finding synonyms is linked to paraphrasing and summarising.
The second part explains key issues such as using numbers and punctuation, organised alphabetically. The third part provides models for common student writing tasks such as case studies and reports. All units are fully cross-referenced and can be used with a teacher or for self-study or reference. Two progress checks allow students to self-assess their learning, and a complete set of answers to the practice exercises is provided.
Additional features of the book include:
- Use of authentic texts from business and economics sources
- Fully updated content, with sections on using AI and exploring electronic sources
- Access to a free interactive website, which includes a full set of teaching notes as well as more challenging exercises, revision material and links to other sources
- Suitability for use at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels
- An index and glossary
All international students of business and economics wanting to maximise their academic potential will find this easy-to-use book an invaluable guide to writing in English for their degree courses and beyond, in their future careers.
"This book should be a valuable resource for both educators and students. Educators will be able to find useful exercises to incorporate into their classes, which will help to introduce key concepts of academic writing in ways which have an immediate application. Students will be able to use the book to follow a structured approach to adapting their writing to a modern academic environment. They will be able to find an appropriate place to start from, depending on their prior knowledge, and work from there as they learn to write for their universities."
Justyn Olby, Head of the Centre for English Communication, Singapore Management University, Singapore
"Writing - or better, structuring an essay or a paper, for instance - is an increasingly difficult "art" particularly for the new generations which approach secondary studies. More and more often in my profession, I meet students who are very good in providing wonderful presentations, but find increasingly difficulties in structuring a convincing essay with logically connected concept. This book is really useful, and allows in a very practical way students (and also experienced academics) to strengthen in a clear and convincing way their own writing capabilities, producing much more persuasive and convincing research"
Andrea Colli, Professor of Global History and Geopolitics, Bocconi University, Italy.
“Stephen Bailey's Academic Writing for International Students of Business and Economics is an invaluable resource for students tackling academic writing in English. With his extensive experience teaching international students, Bailey guides readers through the complexities of crafting essays and reports. This book is indispensable for those transitioning to university-level writing, offering a flexible structure adaptable to classroom, one-to-one, or self-study environments. It is an essential tool for achieving clarity and accuracy in academic work.”
