This book challenges traditional epistemological frameworks by developing a de-idealized account of epistemic systems (ESs) that centers on knowledge practices rather than abstract principles alone. It develops an epistemic agent-based account of ESs that incorporates the social, political, and ontological dimensions of knowledge production.
The book addresses critical gaps in current epistemological theory by examining how real-world knowledge practices unfold across different communities. Through a detailed case study of knowledge about testosterone across medical practitioners, trans masculine and non-binary users, and bodybuilding/entertainment sports communities, the book reveals how social organization, power dynamics, and ontological commitments shape ESs. By integrating insights from the sociology of scientific knowledge, feminist political epistemology, and political ontology, the book offers fresh perspectives on fundamental epistemic questions, including: How do we understand disagreement between different knowledge communities?, when should knowledge producers outside institutionalized science be recognized as experts?, and what are the implications for science in a "post-truth" environment?
Epistemic Systems in Action will appeal to researchers and graduate students interested in epistemology, feminist philosophy, philosophy of science, social and political philosophy, gender studies, and the sociology of knowledge.
"This book offers a compelling challenge to abstract theorizing by grounding epistemology in real knowledge practices and power relations. Drawing on qualitative interviews about testosterone use across medical practitioners, users, and sports contexts, it highlights the messy realities of knowledge practices and develops an agent-based account of epistemic systems that attends to the power dynamics within knowledge production. It also combines insights from feminist epistemology and the sociology of scientific knowledge to provide fresh insights into the epistemology of disagreement and expertise. Researchers across disciplines will find it an invaluable resource for understanding and critiquing contemporary forms of knowledge production."
Robin McKenna, University of Liverpool, UK
Building on an extensive study of how testosterone is understood and used across contexts, Epistemic Systems in Action offers a unique take on how scientific knowledge is lived, enacted, and developed. Veigl succeeds in balancing attention to scientific content with a focus on how such content is experienced and transformed through various forms of agency—a real feat for such a controversial topic, and a joyful read for anybody interested in expertise and real-world processes of knowledge making.
