Education and Community in Africa cover

Originally published in 1976, Education and Community in Africa provided a snapshot of the state of play of education and community in Africa. Though some of these chapters talked in general about Africa, several looked specifically at countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Rhodesia (as was). Others looked at a whole region, such as East Africa. One looked at a single school, in Ethiopia, in its community relations.

In 1976, the big picture and the details of education-community relations presented here provided a fertile ground for geographic, social and political comparison. Now, with this reissue, readers can make further comparisons over time. What for instance has happened to ‘Education for Self-reliance’ associated with Julius Nyerere in Tanzania in the 1960s and 1970s? And what about the Harambee or community self-help movement in Kenya? Many of the initiatives for community education in the 1970s were closely linked to international cooperation agencies, both multilateral and bilateral. But what happened to these when the phases of external funding ceased or when the external agencies themselves stopped funding?
