Religious Education for Everyone argues for a public-democratic approach to religious education that gives access to what a religious way of life has to offer to all. Hannam and Biesta propose a new approach to religious education centred on a responsibility to introduce children and young people to what a religious way of being ‘in’ and ‘with’ the world may have to offer for them, individually and collectively. Their approach is an existential approach to religious education, one focussed on ways of leading one’s life, as opposed to more common confessional, anthropological, knowledge-focused or literacy approaches. They argue that since the religious way of life is an option open to everyone, education has the task to provide the new generation with opportunities to explore this option as an ‘existential possibility’ and an opportunity to discern its value in their life and for the world. The book opens a new dialogue on religious education in schools and on a societal level as something that can enable children and young people to share and develop their own thinking around issues including war, inequality and the climate crisis, as well as deepened understandings of the beauty of human life.
The authors advocate for an existential approach to the subject of religious education, which transcends the traditional debate between denominational and non-denominational approaches. Their solid philosophical argumentation for the ongoing search for meaning in the classroom is an invitation to creatively continue the debate on the future of religious education. * Bert Roebben, Professor of Religious Education, University of Bonn, Germany *
A bold and timely intervention. Whether or not readers share Hannam and Biesta's critique of the knowledge, literacy and worldviews turns, they will find a serious invitation in an age of measurement and misinformation, to rethink why religious education matters for every child, and how it might help young people discern how to live well. They make a compelling case for a religious education that opens the religious life as an existential possibility and trusts children and young people to discern its value for themselves. * Bob Bowie, Professor of Religion and Worldviews Education and Director of the National Institute for Christian Education Research, Canterbury Christ Church University, UK *
It is now time to address the existential dimensions of both RE and education generally. Children and young people deserve this; teachers need something new to ponder over – and the challenges we as humanity face ask for this. In their book Hannam and Biesta put forward a strong argument and beautifully elaborate on how it can be developed. * Karin Sporre, Professor Emerita, Umeå University, Sweden *
