This volume charts the history of Christian devotion in Europe from the Middle Ages to the present through the objects with which people have lived their religion.
This volume brings the history of Christian devotional culture in Europe from the Middle Ages to the present to life through the objects, texts, and images that people have used to practise and express their religion.
At the heart of Experiencing Material Christianity are 21 empirical case studies, each of which captures the writer's encounter with a particular ‘thing’ that has played a role in the religious lives of European Christians. The examples are drawn from across the continent and include both well-known objects, such as the famous Scala Santa, or Holy Stairs, in Rome and the shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in France, and lesser-known places and curiosities, such as a pilgrimage site in the mountains of Kosovo and votive objects from Greek Orthodox devotional practice. The concise and illustrated chapters provide an accessible and compelling overview of the breadth of material expressions of Christianity in Europe.
The introduction and afterword frame the rich examples by outlining overarching themes in the study of material religion, including practices, expressions, and instruments, that reoccur throughout the collection. As a whole, the volume acts as a fresh entry point to the multi-disciplinary study of the cultural and material dimension of Christian devotion that shows how the material and the sensual have interacted with the spiritual across several centuries throughout Europe.
Since I published Material Christianity in 1995, it is impressive to see how the study of devotional objects and spaces has matured. This is a fascinating array of case studies that thoughtfully demonstrate not only the breadth of the field but how one cannot understand Christianity without considering the physical dimension of belief. The finely crafted and accessible chapters speak to the endless creativity of the human imagination as people encounter and interact with the divine. * Colleen McDannell, Professor of History, University of Utah, USA *
This extraordinary volume, with contributions stretching across medieval to modern Christianity, is strikingly personal in its fusion of autobiographical reflections and scholarly reconstruction, each chapter focusing on a historical object of personal importance to a contributor who clusters the familiar, sometimes prosaic motifs of lived religion into symphonies of subjective apprehension and the physical agency of places and things in past and present. A gorgeous book. * Christopher Ocker, John Dillenberger Professor of the History of Christianity, Graduate Theological Union, USA *
An imaginative and empathetic study of lived Christian practice viewed through personal experiential engagement with ‘things.’ The authors have succeeded in producing an affective scholarship of the relationship between people, objects, places and the Divine, using engaging ‘exempla’ or case studies. The reader is drawn sympathetically into understanding the embodied, sensory experiences of devotion, and their continuities and changes over time. * Elizabeth Tingle, Professor Emerita in History, De Montfort University, UK *
