As a conclusion to his popular series of industrial railways in the regions around the UK, as well two volumes examining steam locomotives at work in industry around the world, here Gordon Edgar looks at the vanishing steam era worldwide. In the main, this book covers the last quarter of a century, both on main and secondary railway lines and in industry, in countries such as China, Myanmar, Eritrea, and Poland.
With stunning photography and commentary, this book takes you on a tour in search of the last vestiges of everyday working steam locomotives of all gauges, as well as featuring locomotives cast aside and forgotten about. Those few remaining steam operations covered could have an uncertain future, facing today’s commercial and political challenges.
'If you like 'real' working steam, this is the book for you.' 5 stars * Steam Railway Magazine, October 2025 *
'The images are described in the accompanying publicity as “stunning” and “evocative”, and we would agree. A larger format would have been more than justified. The standard of reproduction is uniformly excellent, with a wide dynamic range: highlights sparkle but are not bleached out while shadows add to the mood without darkening the whole image. The weather is not always ideal, and there are several impressive night views. No details are given of the photographic equipment used. A handful of the pictures are reproduced in monochrome for effect. In short, a fine collection of great railway photos!' * Continental Modeller Magazine, March 2026 *
