Critical Ethnography

A fitting edition to undergraduate qualitative methods course text lists. This book should also be recommended for post-grads undertaking forays into critical ethnographic studies. Madison′s book is thoughtfully compiled and contains a number of sections that students and teachers may find particularly useful and informative. Of note is the extensive chapter on ethics, and also, that on the writing process. The value of these sections lies in Madison′s ability to highlight the extensive array of issues that confound ethnographic researchers and their work. Of additional value are the number of case study/literature vignettes provided throughout that effectively serve to demonstrate the practical dimensions dimensions of Madison′s arguments, and also, introduce readers to fresh concepts, literature, and contextual case studies. There are some sections were Madison has evidently opted for breadth rather than depth, which may irk some readers who desire more rigorous discussion.
