I have used this text in delivering behaviour management training for staff across the organisation. I have also used it within teacher training, specifically for the behaviour managment unit on the DTLLS programme. It offers a theoretical grounding which helps staff and students understand some of the common, and less common factors for poor behaviour; the text also provides updated strategies for dealing with behaviours to manage the learning environment effectively.

I found the chapter on adult education especially useful for members of staff delivering lectures to students because they are a specialist in their area and not a trained teacher. I loved this book. The case studies have a ring of authenticity, the book structure and layout is clear and logical and the writing is accessible without being over simplified. The author starts from the real life experience of new teachers and interweaves these narratives with psychological learning theory and explanations of the social and economic situations our learners find themselves in. As a teacher educator I will use some of the case studies in my class sessions. I will also recommend that all my trainee teachers consider buying this book - especially those trainees working with mandated learners. I read this book in one sitting, it was entertaining, it made me reflect on my own teaching and I could see at once that it was current and relevant.
