The Futures of Work cover

The future of work will not simply be determined by rapid technological change. Work's future is also being shaped by climate change, the care crunch, inequality, and rising authoritarianism. The Futures of Work provides an accessible introduction to how work and workers worldwide are being affected by these five interacting crises.

With one chapter devoted to each crisis, the book summarizes recent trends and the forces at play, zooming in particularly on what workers and their supporters are doing, and could do, to push for fairer and more worker-friendly outcomes. The crises are global in scope, and the book's arguments are accordingly bolstered by evidence from around the world, including the United States and Europe, but also Asia and the Pacific, Africa, and Latin America. The title The Futures of Work – plural – signals Tilly's contention that the future of work is not set in stone, and that it will ultimately be determined by the choices all of us make.

"Tilly's interdisciplinary, comparative perspective shows forcefully that futures of work are not inevitable, but that power and institutions will shape how work is reconfigured due to the convergence of crises associated with technology, inequality, caregiving, climate change, and authoritarianism."
Arne L. Kalleberg, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

"A superb, evidence-driven guide to the interdisciplinary literature on workplace transformation by a leading labor scholar. Tilly deftly navigates longstanding debates about precarity and inequality, along with current challenges from AI to climate to carework. A smart and insightful book."
Ruth Milkman, City University of New York Graduate Center
