The third classic gothic mystery starring supernatural sleuths Lockett & Wilde – for fans of Lemony Snicket and Murder Most Unladylike.
“Once you enter the Strange world of Lockett and Wilde, you’ll never want to leave.” Jack Meggitt-Phillips, author of The Beast and the Bethany series
Winter is closing in. During the long, dark London evenings, Matilda and her ghostly companion, Edgar, puzzle over the mystery surrounding the wisp who haunts her aunt's theatre. By day Matilda attends Euthalia's, where she enjoys the ghost cat sitting on her knee during lessons, the companionship of her (living) friend Florence and helping in the library. But there's a spiritual presence among the stacks who seems to have yet another mystery for the supernatural sleuths to solve…
The book is beautifully illustrated throughout, so much so that it is a graphic as well as a text experience. Pam Smy’s artwork brings wonder and light to every page and brilliantly supports the warmth and humour of the writing. A wonderful author and illustrator pairing, and a wonderful detective pairing too - and readers will hope there are many more spooktacular mysteries to come.
LoveReading4Kids recommends this for readers aged eight and above. It is a great choice for growing readers moving towards longer fiction who like a fast paced mystery story with illustrations and laughs.
I adore this series... with 2 brilliant protagonists, an eerie mystery to solve and at 200 pages with cool black, white and red tone illustrations, it’s accessible to so many readers. Equally, themes around fitting in at school or being embarrassed of family members are sure to resonate with readers! While I loved the central mystery in this, a particular final twist involving a much-loved character really got me and showed what a superb trilogy this is. Make sure you read this otherwise you’re at risk of ending up like one of these wisps with meeting Lockett & Wilde as your unfinished business! * Check ‘Em Out Books *
Unlike a lot of books aimed at 9+ readers, this is not only quite short at around the 200-page mark but also features plenty of wonderful artwork, in this case from Pam Smy, which adds both to the book’s eerie feeling and its humour. Not just perfect for Spooky Season but a series that can be enjoyed all year round, I am sad to say goodbye to Matilda and Edgar and hope that we will see further collaborations from author and illustrator soon. * Mrs Sydney's Famous World's Smallest Libra
