Affective Assemblages and Local Economies cover

Affective Assemblages and Local Economies delves into the dynamics of peripheral and underprivileged rural areas by employing the concept of complex adaptive assemblages. The book seeks to uncover the unique aspects of these regions when viewed through the lens of everyday experiences and interactions, rather than solely through the perspectives of planners and policy-makers.

Through ethnographic research and qualitative interviews conducted over the course of a year in Cornwall, UK, and South West Virginia, USA, the author highlights the importance of understanding local economies from the ground up. By focusing on the narratives of ordinary individuals, the book reveals the rich tapestry of relationships and connections that exist within these communities. This approach emphasizes the significance of local voices and experiences in shaping the understanding of regional dynamics.

Drawing on the Deleuzian concept of affective assemblages, the book introduces the idea of the Region-Assemblage, which illustrates the intricate interdependencies among people, objects, organizations, and processes within the observed regions. This framework not only enhances our comprehension of rural economies but also suggests ways in which support for these communities can be improved. Ultimately, Affective Assemblages and Local Economies advocates for a more nuanced appreciation of rural life, emphasizing the value of local insights in fostering sustainable development and resilience.

This is an excellent book, theoretically sound and featuring fascinating case studies. Willett looks comparatively at two regions across the UK and the USA, to construct a rural development model and critique existing approaches within a wider political context. -- Menelaos Gkartzios, Newcastle University
There is much to unpack here, and it is deftly done across the first three chapters. Willett is adept at translating often nebulous ideas for a wider regional studies audience, whether neatly parsing affect theory (a minor academic industry itself) or introducing Bergsonian temporality (without tears). Such conceptual clarity should earn the book space on many different shelves. Readers mystified by mention of assemblage and affect, or coming to the concepts for the first time, will find explanations made the more digestible through helpful analogy. Equally, readers already in the theoretical know will find plenty to reflect on, extend and remix. * Regional Studies *
