Learn to paint 50 vibrant and varied watercolour figures in simple steps, using the loose, expressive style of popular artist Trevor Waugh.

Gain confidence in capturing motion, creating character and understanding proportion so that you can bring your watercolour figures to life.

The 50 simple watercolour projects capture a range of people, of all ages, in a variety of poses, from dancers and sportspeople to a woman walking her dog, a man sheltering under his umbrella and a collection of people at a bustling market. Each beginner-friendly project can be completed in around 5 simple steps, using a small selection of colours and a handful of easy-to-follow watercolour techniques.

  • No prior knowledge of watercolour techniques needed – This book contains a short list of tools and materials needed to get started and a clear and informative guide to the basic techniques needed.
  • No drawing skills required – The line drawings are provided at full size, ready to copy or trace, to give you the confidence to get started with your paints.
  • Suitable for artists of all levels – Trevor’s clear instructions guide the reader from start to finish in a way that makes it easy for anyone to pick up a brush and learn how to paint in his expressive, energetic style.

Whether you want to create a hand-painted card, decorate your wall or maybe you simply want to learn the relaxing art of painting with watercolours, with 50 figures to choose from, you’ll easily find something to inspire you.

Trevor Waugh needs no introduction and is another master of the simple image. Paint 50: Watercolour Figures comes as near as possible to a guide that I've waited many years to see - one on putting figures into larger paintings. Trevor's simple images are full of character and would populate any landscape or townscape admirably with no adaptation. As the days warm up, why not treat your creative self?

-- Henry Malt * The Artist - March Issue *

Let us pause for a minute to celebrate the fact that this is not a book about portraiture, or even recognisable individuals. It is something that has been needed for many years – a guide to painting figures to populate a broader composition.

While Trevor mostly doesn’t set his people in context, he nevertheless includes sufficient background that you can get the idea. The point, also, is that this is not a prescriptive guide where this woman belongs in this landscape, or this street scene requires this very specific group. Rather, he shows you how to create outlines that fit the scale you require by using fairly generous marks and carefully graded colours.

The result is that, instead of static observers, you get characters who occupy and move through the scene, sometimes pushing a pram, sometimes riding a bicycle or a camel. At other times, they may be involved in a heated discussion or a game of cards or perhaps just sauntering aimlessly.

Whatever the gods of art are, we should thank them that this much-needed guide has finally appeared.
