Stereophonic brings us inside the elusive world of a recording studio, as a rock band on the brink of superstardom attempts to create their difficult second album. Running on a diet of booze, sleep deprivation, and a giant bag of cocaine, interpersonal relationships are pushed to breaking point as a process that was meant to last a few weeks becomes a never-ending ordeal.

With original songs by Arcade Fire's Will Butler, David Adjmi's play is an electrifying portrait of a band wracked with division that nevertheless just might be on the verge of creating a masterpiece.

Stereophonic opened at Playwrights Horizons in New York City in 2023, directed by Daniel Aukin. It transferred to Broadway in 2024, becoming the most Tony-nominated play of all time and winning Best Play – and to London's West End in 2025.

'An extraordinary, electrifying odyssey... This stunningly rendered tale of a band on the brink of creative genius or total meltdown is a triumph'

* Guardian *

'David Adjmi's superb, gorgeously textured drama sinks us into the creative fever dream as a makeshift family of artists tears itself apart in pursuit of perfection... while sagas of backstage bust-ups and troubled artists are nothing new, Adjmi brings something deeper, steeping us in the granular detail of the creative process: the craft and the graft, the exhausted wrangling and the sudden soaring ecstasy of the perfect take... Adjmi's script comes in somewhere between Chekhov and the slow-burn dramas of Annie Baker, gradually building towards something much greater than the sum of its parts'

* Financial Times *

'David Adjmi's magnum opus'

* New Yorker *

'Stereophonic is not just the year's best, but one of the best works of narrative art about the day-to-day grind and emotional toll of artistic creation'

* Washington Post *

'An absolute triumph of a show, a delicious four-course meal about a band packin' up, shackin' up, and attempting to keep their success going, as scary as it may seem'

* Rolling Stone *

'Adjmi's best play so far, Stereophonic is as rich and lustrous as they come'

* New York Times *

'A music studio masterpiece... conjures the unreal sense of time in a place where it is always three in the morning... a remarkably precise evocation of what it is to be in a band... the tautness of the writing lets the play's significance shine in the gaps between the music... a meditation on human nature itself... It's terrific'

* WhatsOnStage *

'Theatrical solid gold. All the tiny details, wild rhythms, and clever hooks add up to a brave, breathtaking whole. The result: a classic'

* Variety *

'A fine-grained, audacious work... captures the sleepless grind and tedium of recording but also the euphoria when the sound comes together... Stereophonic is hugely engrossing and enjoyable'

* Evening Standard *

'Gorgeously goosebump-inducing... a breathless hurricane of musical ecstasy... a soul stirring feat of creative wizardry... There are no platitudinous philosophies underpinning the drama. Just utter reverence for the almost mystic intrigue of the creative process, and a knee-deep wading into the knotted lives of flawed humans... Stereophonic is effortlessly cool'

* Broadway World *

'A play that deserves all its accolades... The beauty of Stereophonic is that it uses rock tropes to offer universal truths about all humans engaged in creating something... What makes this play greater than it might appear on paper is its approach to authenticity. Stereophonic uses all the hiatuses, sometimes lengthy ones, that can punctuate a real event... these long fallow moments are a vital part of the mix, a suggestion of the tedium of the creative process. What they build to are the superb instances where suddenly everything works... Magically, it blooms'

* Arts Desk *

'A triumphant celebration of the art of collaborative songwriting... a must-see for theatre and music lovers alike'

* The Upcoming *

'A fascinating look behind the scenes at an album recording... it really does border on genius... Stereophonic somehow manages to feel completely slick and polished while still retaining an element of being rough around the edges... it is going to be one huge hit'

* All That Dazzles *

'Timeless and captivating... Adjmi ensures that every single moment is used to the full extent of its dramatic potential... the storytelling is flawless'
