Learning Skills for Nursing Students

A useful book which has a number of very good and well explained reminders especially in relation to getting started as a student in a new environment of higher education. The points on the need to assess self and prepare for higher education is very good and clear. Other parts containing information on writing skills were useful, eg. making notes in a lecture or classroom session, prioritising time and writing an asnwer. Excellent blending of the new NMC standards for Pre-registration Nursing Education.From the outset it has a strong focus on the importance of being a professional. This book outlines the essential skills that stuent will require as they progress through their programme. Helps student link the required evidence to meet NMC standards and help them make the links from theory to practice.This book covers some essential elements of practice numeracy, writing skills and information technology management. It helps students use resources they have found to their best effect given the plethora of information available.Useful websitesround off each chapter to enable further reference to additional resources. This is a very useful book in relation to the content and structure of the chapters - easy to navigate and understand with excellent topics and advice for the student, for both pre-registration and post-registration learners. This book is ideal for first year nursing students. The content is varied and includes some very relevant material on practice skills. Likewise, the study skills information is up-to-date and comprehensive. The only thing I would highlight to students is that the recommended referencing style mentioned in this book is not the same as the one used at Bournemouth. This is a book that I have found to be very informative. It has something for every learner, whether it be about reflective practice or activities to help them strengthen their maths skills. I have certainly been recommending it as a good tool to prepare my students for their nurse training.

I think this book has a great deal of merit for junior pre-registration nursing students and possibly even for those considering entering nursing (e.g. on an access course) and as a refresher for others. The chapters are generally reasonable well presented and though there may be a little duplication (e.g. referencing information) this is no bad thing. I did find some of the boxed information, particularly in the first few pages a little overpowering and think perhaps the introduction could be less fussy. On p114 there is comment about using material from the internet and I think a health warning about copyright would be useful here. I appreciate you do discuss palgiarism though am not sure junior students would appreciate this includes material from a range of sources, not just text. Overall a useful book. I like the layout of the book and the many exercises. \
However, it is too broad I think. With the exception of areas like ′social networking′ covers domains already presented in the OU study skills book.\
The data in the preceding books in the Transforming Nursing Practice Series, ′Critical thinking...′ ′Information Skills.....′ and Understanding research...′ contain more specific and relevant ′study themes′.\

The book was very easy to follow and had good case studies which help the student link the subjects to real situations. I would also recommend this book to anyone thinking of becoming a nurse, as I think that if they could get a grip of most of the chapters prior to starting their training then they will already have a step up. It is, as ever with this series, an accessible text for students in terms of both readability and affordability. There are many activities and case studies throughout which students always welcome.
