Introduction to Statistical Mediation Analysis cover

This volume introduces the statistical, methodological, and conceptual aspects of mediation analysis. Applications from health, social, and developmental psychology, sociology, communication, exercise science, and epidemiology are emphasized throughout.

There are five parts to the book. Part 1 covers definitions, history, and applications for the mediation model. In Part II the conceptual model described in the first part of the book is quantified in the estimation of mediation in traditional single mediator models. This part of the book describes the estimation of mediation effects including assumptions of the methods, statistical tests, and construction of confidence limits for the mediated effect. Part III describes advanced mediation models with new chapters describing collider, confounder, and mediator third-variable models, the potential outcomes causal mediation model, and Bayesian mediation methods. Part IV describes the traditonal and then the potential outcomes approach for two or more mediators, categorical variables, structural equation modeling, measurement, multilvel models, and longitudinal mediation models. Part V, discusses general issues in the investigation of mediation including experimental designs, additional approaches to identifying mediating variable, guidelines for planning and conducting a mediation study, and possible future directions.

The primary audiences for this book are advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and researchers from many substantive areas. The first type of reader will consist of persons skilled in a substantive area but less experienced with statistical methods. Researchers planning a study where mediating mechanisms are investigated also fall in this group. The second type of reader is sophisticated statistically but without much exposure to mediation analysis.

"Dave MacKinnon is a globally recognized expert on Statistical Mediation Analysis and a top author in the Multivariate Applications Series. His second edition includes five new chapters, updated material, and nearly 500 new references. This will be a much-sought-after and informative new edition for students, researchers, and professors, among others."

Lisa L. Harlow, PhD, Professor Emerita, University of Rhode Island

"Mediation analyses are critical for understanding psychological interventions and processes, but they can be complicated. Thank heavens for the Second Edition of MacKinnon’s seminal textbook. It is up-to-date with detailed explanations and practical examples. I recommend it highly!"

Patrick E. Shrout, Professor Emeritus of Psychology, New York University

"MacKinnon does it again! One of the foremost experts on mediation is back with a new edition that expands and enriches the innovative original text. The classic chapters from which many of us (myself included) first learned the tenets of mediation all return and are accompanied by new chapters incorporating the latest advances in mediation research including causal mediation, Bayesian methods, and confounding. The second edition of Introduction to Statistical Mediation Analysis maintains its rigor and expands its breadth, positioning the text to remain a top-choice resource for methodologists and researchers for years to come."

Dan McNeish, Arizona State University

"In this second edition Dave MacKinnon has not only presented very lucid discussions of sophisticated issues on the topic of mediational models, but he has also kept the text completely accessible so that no one would have any difficulty in grasping the material."
