Shortlisted for the Wales Book of the Year Prize 2007
This new collection from Christine Evans follows last year's well-received Selected Poems. Hers is a sensitive and persuasive voice, highly attuned to the vagaries of the seasons, to the landscapes and inhabitants of the beautiful Llyn Peninsula in North Wales where the author has made her home.
As well as vibrant short lyrics on everything from 'Bluebells in Nanhoron' to jets flying over Wales, there are a series of tender elegiac pieces on relatives, meditations on the last moments of Shelley and the fates of the Brontes, and a number of poems featuring the mysterious Island of Bardsey.
Born in Yorkshire, Christine Evans moved to Wales in 1967. She divides her time between farms on the Llyn Peninsula and Bardsey Island.
Christine Evans was born in Yorkshire, and moved to Wales in 1967. She taught English on the Llyn Peninsula, where she lives with her husband and son on a farm. Her first collection, Looking Inland, was described as having "something to say that is worth saying... a sane response to experience". Her work is widely pubished; Seren produced four collections: Looking Inland, Falling Back, Cometary Phases and Island of Dark Horses.
"Acutely moving... read it and weep - for all the right reasons." - New Welsh Review "...a distinctive voice in contemporary poetry." - Poetry Wales Christine Evans's Selected Poems (Seren, 2004) was the winner of the GBP3000 inaugural Roland Mathias Prize, 2005.
