A comical slice of British Asian life set in the Midlands.

In Birmingham’s Balti Land, curry wars rage with price slashing and chef poaching. Yahsin Anwar and his family plan a grand re-opening where you can pile your plate for under a fiver and ‘Curry-oke’ into the night. Can they succeed as things hot up in the kitchen?

A comical slice of British Asian life set in the Midlands.

In Birmingham’s Balti Land, where Indian restaurants ruthlessly compete for custom, curry wars rage with price slashing and chef poaching.
Restaurateur Yahsin Anwar needs to stop his restaurant being swallowed up by a competitor. To ward off this threat, his family plan a grand re-opening where you can pile your plate for under a fiver and ‘Curry-oke’ into the night. But the temperature in the kitchen soon rises, as the chef is faced with the challenge of producing dozens of dishes, hampered by staff whose personal affairs are also hotting up…

“The writing is excellent, sharply observant about the lives of the luckless wage-slaves in the kitchen. The acting has a superb understated naturalism… the smells of the Indian cooking as winningly authentic as the humanity of the characterisation.” – The Daily Telegraph

"Balti Kings is excellent theatre and gives a faithful representation of characters that Birmingham’s Asian population know only too well. A great range of emotions is washed down with humour that is in turn obvious and subtle. The result is a cutting-edge examination of a rapidly changing culture"- Metro Life Birmingham.

"celebrates the potential of live theatre to plunge you into another word, smells and all…..an inspired idea, well executed under the direction of Kristine Landon-Smith. It is compassionate as it gradually reveals the fragility of its weary characters’ lives, but it is also frequently very funny and is full of witty little touches"- Financial Times.

"This is what I would call Balti Magic- Entertaining, both funny and poignant."- Theatreworld internet magazine

"Bhuchar and Khan’s humour and sharp eye for telling details make the play both amusing and intriguing. BK recreates in great details the illusion of cooking a grand buffet…..the highpoint of the evening is a highly choreographed sequence during which the cooking process really starts to heat up"- The Stage

"Balti Kings could scarcely be more timing with its perfectly judged blend of universal comic themes and cultural in jokes."- Metro London.

"Staged in the round by Kristine Landon-Smith the show wins you over with its energy, charm and vivacious performances."-The Guardian

"A light-hearted and entertaining evening with a serious insight into the realities of one group of workers’ lives"- The Socialist Review

"a pungent fest of entertainment guaranteed to whet your appetite. Tamasha presents a multi-sensory experience as the sights, sounds and smells of a real-life Balti kitchen fills the stage."- Metro (Midlands)
