The mice start coming to him to hear him read the next story. The cat tries all sorts of different stories - funny ones, sad ones, even slightly boring ones but he can't quite find what works best to help him 'catch' the mice and things don't quite work out the way he expects. And then he decides to write his own story to see if that works. The cat discovers he is a great storyteller and through the experience of reading all the different books to the cats, he ultimately finds happiness. And even the cats are contented.
