If you are already a fan—and it’s hard not to be—it will fill in any gaps in your knowledge in great detail. It doesn’t set out to be a biography—there are already seven of those, impressively—but this encyclopaedic dissection of Corbett’s life, much of it from newly discovered letters and other sources, nevertheless provides a comprehensive picture, aided by many excellent photographs.

He displayed the hunter’s paradox: a love and respect for the animals he killed and dedication as a conservationist— a concept that is at odds with the current prevailing narrative around hunting. The Indians were in no doubt about his legacy; long after Independence, they renamed their first national park, in the Himalayan foothills, in the state of Uttarakhand, in his memory.
