This volume offers a description of five well known artworks depicting the Crucifixion of Christ: The Crucifixion Panel of the Isenheim Altarpiece, France; The Golgotha of Jasna Gora, Poland; The Carfin Monstrance, Scotland; the San Damiano Cross, Italy; and the Moone High Cross, Ireland. The author has followed certain main themes from each work that seemed especially meaningful to him in expressing particular aspects of the Cross. Since each artwork is unique, each chapter has a different approach. Nonetheless, each links to the next, so that together they form a coherent whole. This volume is especially suited to Lenten reflections and may more widely even inspire the reader to visit one or more of the Crosses as a pilgrim.
'In this short work John Watts considers and reflects on five presentations of Calvary, each representing different people, different viewpoints, but all agreeing in their message. There is something beautiful about all five. As writer and historian John never fails to capture our interest, and his latest work is no exception. It is a truly beautiful and inspiring book, well documented and theologically profound.'
Sr Loyola Kelly OSF, former Superior General of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception
'In a change to his usual historical work, Dr John Watts offers us a wonderful series of personal meditations and reflections on how some artists have expressed themselves in their own times, by portraying the Passion and death of Jesus on the Cross. A highly personal and deeply spiritual insight into the mystery of the Redemption. Much to be recommended.'
