Can an introvert and an extrovert be friends? Read this neurodiverse and neuro-inclusive story about feelings and self-esteem for 2 to 6 year olds, new for 2026.

Outside she is a shy little girl, but inside are magic worlds and rocket submarines. Discover the power of the introvert.

Outside she is a shy little girl, but inside are magic worlds and rocket submarines. Discover the power of the introvert.

It’s fun to be part of a busy, whizzy crowd. Sometimes, when things are noisy, do you long for the space and quiet that lets your imagination flow? Get ready for Solo to take you on an adventure where we discover being alone is not the same as being lonely, and you should not judge an introvert by her cover!

We can guess Solo is an introvert through her name, but you can see from her bright yellow coat that she’s also strong and independent. She isn’t lonely: she enjoys being alone. Jesse is a classic extrovert who immediately asks Solo to play, but he also has emotional intelligence, working out quickly that Solo is overwhelmed. When he finds her again, they create a special place where the two are friends who perfectly compliment each other.

Clark uses colour and shape to perfectly express the complexity of each character and show us the story instead of just telling.

Solo’s story will validate the shyer ones amongst us, and point louder, more outgoing souls towards a different way of being, one they just might enjoy.
LoveReading4Kids
This is an engaging story with underlying guidance on how an introverted child might be supported in uncomfortable situations. The risograph-style illustrations are contemporary and add a lively, graphic feel, making this an enjoyable family read.
INIS Magazine
Neil Clark shows that both the whizzy world and Solo’s quieter one have much to offer, the latter leaving space for the imagination to flourish. Embedded quietly in his story is the message that being alone and being lonely are not the same at all.
Books for Keeps
I strongly recommend this feel-good picture book that will encourage plenty of discussion about different kinds of personalities and preferred activities.
