The Bounty Writer cover

Andrew Don’s memoir-style journalism guide, based on 40 successful years as a professional journalist, writer and editor, explains how anybody can achieve their dream and earn six-figures as an independent freelance journalist.
The Bounty Writer tells the story of how the author started out as an independent freelance journalist and includes valuable lessons and practical tips about how to keep the money rolling in.
From the blurb:
Average freelance earnings are £20,000, so I figure I’ve got something to say about how to make big money as a freelance.
I’m no Piers Morgan or Andrew Neil but I’ve had 30 successful years trading as Don’s Hard News and now I am living my dream, two minutes’ walk from the beach in a beautiful rural location.
The Bounty Writer tells the story of how I started out as an independent freelance journalist and includes valuable lessons about how to keep the money rolling in – and you don’t have to be a household name.
I am nothing special. If I can do it, so can you!

I read this excellent book in two sittings. Some great advice for aspiring freelancers! I know from experience that Andrew is highly tenacious, but this is a must-read for all!

Much more than an invaluable guide to becoming a successful freelance writer. This book is extremely interesting, entertaining and informative. As well as offering excellent tips and advice for independent journalists, the author speaks honestly and movingly about dealing with tragedy and mental health issues from an early age. Over a 40 year journalistic career it has taken an exceptional mix of talent, dedication and determination to allow the author to enjoy outstanding success and to ultimately fulfil his dreams.

Great insightful tips in an easy to digest format.

This is a great read for not only aspiring journalists but for anyone looking to go down the self-employment route who is looking for easy to comprehend tips.

Andrew adds humour to emphasise the points in a flowing narrative that describes his journey from start to finish with all the ups and downs.

I would highly recommend this book which is written for the lay person. It is a story of discovery and how to overcome adversity with a positive mindset.

Andrew Don is a one-off, a character. On the other hand, his recipe for business success is very simple, as is usually the case. The trouble is, of course, that so many people overlook the "simple". They are not as focussed as Andrew is.

With this in mind, anybody aspiring to be a freelance, sorry independent, journalist should not only read The Bounty Writer but keep it in a prominent position. You might be a great writer, have collected many by-lines, understand that deadlines are inviolate and be tough enough to do "death knocks". You can still have your thoughts provoked by what Andrew writes and use his book from time to time as an audit of your performance in some key areas.

Public relations people, the good, the poor and the awful, will also gain much from acquiring a copy.

Essential reading for any self-employed journalist. I've worked as a self-employed journalist for more than 20 years, so I can say that there's absolutely nothing in this book to disagree with. Not many people could keep pace with Andrew's dedication to long hours; but for any budding - or experienced - freelancer that wants to understand how to build and nurture their business to support them for years to come, this book clearly explains how to do that. The Bounty Writer is written in the same no-bullshit style as Andrew's news and features. I can't recommend it enough.
