FOR FANS OF THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT
Set in the late Cold War-era Soviet Union, SPY’S MATE: A NOVEL follows the coming of age of Yasha Basmajian, a young chess prodigy of Armenian origin who rises through the ranks of the Soviet chess establishment with dizzying rapidity. Along the way, however, he must contend with many pitfalls, including operatives who manipulate him, jealous rivals who try to humiliate him, and high officials who threaten him when he asserts his independence, or takes a principled stance.
With help from a renegade coach and a team of anti-establishment grandmasters, Yasha manages to run the gauntlet of two Candidates Tournaments until eventually he faces the sinister, predatory World Chess Champion, Evgeny Volosin, in a match where the stakes are nothing less than life and death.

Review of Spy's Mate from NickplaysChess.com
"Spy’s Mate by Brad Buchanan is an enjoyable and briskly-paced spy novel set in the USSR.... I found it both entertaining and thought-provoking.... I want to highlight a couple features about it that I think makes it a unique book. To start, this novel has actual chess diagrams in it. Any well-equipped student of chess history will recognize certain positions given in the book... The story is fictional, but the inspirations are real: The political intrigue of Soviet Chess was real... this novel tells a page-turning story that is shockingly plausible based on its setting, and that excites me because it can be an entertaining introduction to one of the most fascinating era of chess: The Soviet era.... And anybody who enjoys a quick-paced spy novel should check it out too, especially if they have even a passing interest in the game." April 2026.
Review of Spy's Mate by Jean-Thomas Nicole in The Cipher Brief
"Set in the final, faltering decade of the Cold War, the novel basks in the atmosphere of ideological decay and political paranoia of that particular time. Buchanan situates his story in the late 1980s, a moment when the Soviet Union stood on the brink of collapse, and the machinery of state surveillance—though omnipresent—had begun to fray at the edges. It is within this climate of desperation and decline that Spy’s Mate finds its pulse, capturing the dread and disorientation of a world where every move is monitored, and every truth is provisional... what truly distinguishes Spy’s Mate from conventional genre fare is the intellect behind it. Buchanan does not merely tell a story, he constructs a labyrinth of strategy, psychology, and political intrigue, inviting the reader to decipher not only the moves of his characters but the deeper motives that animate them.... Buchanan’s narrative is steeped in the logic of espionage, psychological manipulation, and strategic deception—core themes that resonate deeply with intelligence professionals, analysts... and chess players." "Chess is the struggle against the error." - Johannes Zukertort
2025 Spy's Mate is a Cold War espionage novel in which a game of chess is a high-stakes affair, love is both true and infused with deceit, and in which all moves, personal and political, are metaphors for the never-ending struggle for dominance in a culture of power and corruption. Much like a game of chess, Spy's Mate is a novel of hidden moves, pre-planned tricks, and intentional deceit, all designed to result in a checkmate.
I found Spy's Mate to be intelligent, engaging, and surprisingly funny. Most importantly, it lingers long after the last move is played.Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2025

Spy’s Mate Is a Genre All Its Own - The "Chesspionage" book of the century
Format: Hardcover
Being a chess instructor and writer myself, I was lucky to have been given an advance copy of Brad Buchanan’s Spy’s Mate—and I read it in less than a week. This was far quicker than I normally read. The book was that good.
Buchanan's novel is not only about chess. It examines strategy, sacrifice, and quest for truth amidst a treacherous world. Set against the dark background of the later Soviet Union, the novel is seen through the eyes of a brilliant Armenian chess prodigy Yasha Basmajian. Although Yasha would love to be left alone in his thoughts and the 64 squares, every move he makes on the chess board carries reprocussions off the chess board into his personal life.
What actually impressed me is the way Buchanan so naturally captures chess culture—the grueling training, the competition, the reverence for the board—and incorporates it so smoothly into a thrilling spy novel. The actual chess positions add depth to the tale and duplicated the very complications that are the lot of Yasha.
The book in my opinion is Cold War USSR meets James Bond, but a pinch of the boogie-wooing style of Austin Powers.
Buchanan matches suspense and humor nicely and creates a genuine “chesspionage”. If you're a chess buff yourself, you're going to love this book. And even if you're not a buff yourself, Spy's Mate will captivate you and reveal why the sixty-four squares are so intriguing to so many of us. Truly, it's alone in its genre—a unique piece of work.
