Albert Grünwedel (1856-1935) was a German Indologist, archaeologist, and Central Asian explorer. He mastered several Asian lan­guages, including Avestan Persian, the sacred language of the Zoroastrians, and was one of the leading scholars of the Lepcha language. He earned his PhD from the University of Munich and became an assistant at the Museum of Ethnology in Berlin in 1883. Grünwedel led several expeditions in the Xinjiang province of China until his retirement in 1921. He authored several books, mostly in German, including Mythology of Buddhism in Tibet and Mongolia; Ancient Buddhist Religion in Chinese Turkestan and A Róng-English Glossary.
