Chris Turner (translator) Translator & Author

Chris Turner studied Modern Languages at the University of Cambridge and went on to gain a doctorate at the University of Sussex for a study of the discourse of the French extreme right in the inter-war years. In his illustrious career as a translator, he has rendered into English works by Yves Bonnefoy, Pascal Quignard, Marguerite Duras, Georges Bataille, Jean Baudrillard, Paul Virilio, André Gorz, Marc Augé, Jean-Paul Sartre, Étienne Balibar, Bruno Latour and Roland Barthes, amongst others. His writing has appeared in The Guardian, The New Statesman and Cultural Politics. Hermits United published, in 2025, Chris Turner’s translation of Zweig’s I Shall Never Abandon My Friends (Je ne quitterai jamais mes amis, Luminary Collection), and in 2026 publishes his translation of the latest in Pascal Quignard’s monumental Last Kingdom series: Happy the Hours.
