John Paul became acquainted with bacteria at Birmingham Medical School and later specialised in medical microbiology. After spending time studying pneumococcal disease in Africa he was a hospital doctor in the UK for many years as well as a regional microbiologist with Public Health England and occupied the role of an honorary clinical professor at Brighton and Sussex Medical School. As a member of the Modernising Medical Microbiology consortium he used whole genome sequencing to study Staphylococcus aureus and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. He has collaborated with the artist Anna Dumitriu on a number of projects over several decades. Outside of work he has pursued a lifelong interest in entomology.
