Kenichi Uchiyama is Professor Emeritus at Daito Bunka University. He was born in Tokyo in 1949. After graduating from the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Waseda University, he worked for 20 years at CASIO COMPUTER CO., LTD. and IBM Japan, Ltd. In 1994, he went to study in the UK. He studied at Lancaster University (Master's degree) and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), completing his doctoral studies. In 1999, he was awarded his Ph.D. from the University of London. His specialties are SSM and action research. In 2004-5, he was a visiting professor at EM Lyon Business School in France.
In 2013-14, he was a visiting professor at Audencia Nantes School of Management in France. Since 2020, he has served as CEO and Chairman of Accommodation Co., Ltd. Kenichi Uchiyama has published "The Theory and Practice of Actuality" (in English), "Genba no Gakutoshiteno Akusyon Risachi (Action Research as a Study in the Field)" (in Japanese), "Akusyon Risachi no Riron to Jissen (Theory and Practice of Action Research: A Critique of Business Management)" (in Japanese), and "Kakugo to Kamae no Akusyon Risachi Jyosetsu (An Introduction to Action Research with Confidence and Readiness)" (in Japanese). He practices SSM and action research in the fields of ODA, nursing, education, project management, and organizational reform, as well as in research and teaching at universities and graduate schools both in Japan and overseas. At the same time, he has a strong track record as a consultant.
Recently, Uchiyama has been working on conceptualizing a new systemic approach to resilience and crisis management using SSM and action research and building the Management School based on SSM and action research as well.
