Paul Merkley graduated with a BMus from the University of Western Ontario (1980) and a PhD from Harvard University (1985). Since then, he has taught in the music department and the medieval and Renaissance studies programs at the University of Ottawa. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and a recipient of the Deems Taylor award. His primary area of research is in early music, in which he has published on Ambrosian chant, tonaries, and music in Renaissance courts. His secondary area of research is film music.
