William Sieghart has leant on poetry since childhood to make sense of his life. It gave him refuge from bullying as an immigrant at British boarding schools, helped him cope when he witnessed and helped when a man was run over in front of him, and again when he went into severe depression as an adult. He went on create the first ever ‘national’ day in Britain when he founded National Poetry Day and then the Forward Prize for poetry; he also founded StreetSmart for the homeless in London (raising £12m to date), and mediates for peace in the Middle East, while bringing poetry to the London Olympics and so much more.
