An Evening with Charco Press  at The Portobello Bookshop

We are delighted to be twinning with Charco Press for this year's Independent Bookshop Week and we're hosting a celebration of the Edinburgh-based indie press on the evening of Saturday 13th June!

As part of the celebrations we'll be welcoming you to the bookshop to enjoy refreshments, hear from some of the Charco team and their translators, have the chance to mingle, and of course, do some late night book shopping! There will be the chance to pick up limited merch including tote bags and bookmarks and signed bookplate editions of Charco titles will be on sale during the event.

The £5 voucher ticket is redeemable against a single copy of any Charco title on the night.

Fiona Mackintosh Author

Fiona Mackintosh is a Senior Lecturer in Latin American Literature at the University of Edinburgh with research interests in contemporary Latin American fiction and poetry (particularly from Argentina), and literary translation. She has published extensively on Alejandra Pizarnik, Silvina Ocampo and Claudia Piñeiro. Her co-translation ofThe Adventures of China Iron by Gabriela Cabezón Cámara was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize in 2020. She recently translated Clara Obligado'sAll that Grows: Nature and Writing (X Artists' Books, 2025).

Fionn Petch Author

Fionn Petch is a Scottish-born translator working from Spanish, Italian and French into English. He lived in Mexico City for 12 years, where he completed a PhD in Philosophy at the UNAM. His translations of Latin American literature for Charco Press have been widely acclaimed. Fireflies by Luis Sagasti was shortlisted for the Translators’ Association First Translation Award 2018. The Distance Between Us by Renato Cisneros received an English PEN Award in 2018. A Musical Offering, also by Luis Sagasti, was shortlisted for the Republic of Consciousness Prize 2021 and won the Society of Authors Premio Valle Inclán 2021 for best translation from Spanish. He now lives in Berlin.

Isabel Adey Author

Isabel Adey is a literary translator and editor working with Spanish, German and English. Originally from Yorkshire, she now lives in Edinburgh, where she also works as a Royal Literary Fund Fellow. Her translation of Giovanna Rivero’s Fresh Dirt from the Grave was longlisted for the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute translation prize in 2024, following a shortlisting for her co-translation of Marvel Moreno’s December Breeze in 2023. Her translations span multiple disciplines, from literary fiction to nonfiction and academia. She has a passion for writing that deals with cultural identity, class politics and migration.

Iona Macintyre Author

Iona Macintyre is a Senior Lecturer in Hispanic Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Iona’s teaching and research has focused on nineteenth-century Spanish American history and culture. Within this area she works primarily on Argentina, history of the book, translation studies, gender studies and transatlantic relations. She has also published on the contemporary fiction of Jorge Accame.

Carolina Orloff Author

Originally from Buenos Aires and based in Edinburgh, Carolina Orloff is a writer as well as an experienced translator and researcher in Latin American literature. In 2016, Carolina co-founded Charco Press, where she acts as Publishing Director and Chief Editor. She is also the co-translator of several books including Jorge Consiglio’s Fate and Ariana Harwicz’s Die, My Love, longlisted for the Booker International Prize and shortlisted for the Valle Inclán Prize.

Wheelchair Access

We have a ramp at the front of the shop which has a ratio of 1:10 and loading capacity of 300kg, and so should be able to be used by most wheelchair users or those with mobility vehicles. The front doors are fully automated. Our shop interior is designed to allow access throughout for wheelchair users and prams, though please note there is only 700mm wide clearance to access the staff toilet.

Sound

We use a PA system to enhance the audio at our live events. We also have a hearing loop system installed, if you’d like to use our loop system during an event please let us know and we’ll make sure we have it set up and connected to the live audio feed during the event. If you wish to attend an event and require BSL interpretation, please give us a few weeks notice and we’ll do our best to arrange an interpreter.
