Extra Teeth: Issue Eight Launch at The Portobello Bookshop

Extra Teeth are back with a brand new issue packed full of brilliant writing from some of Scotland's finest writers, both emerging and established, and we're hosting the launch event! Join us for an evening of readings from contributors to the magazine: Christina Riley, Gabrielle Tse, and Victoria MacKenzie.

This event will take place in the bookshop with an in-person audience, as well as a livestream for attendees watching from home.

In-person vouchers can be redeemed on the night of the event against a single copy of Issue Eight of Extra Teeth – we will have a list of attendees with vouchers to be redeemed. Please note that only one voucher can be redeemed per magazine. Livestream vouchers are valid until the day after the event and can be redeemed on our website against a single copy of Issue Eight.

Wines will be provided by Smith and Gertrude, and non-alcoholic options will be available.

Featuring some of Scotland’s best emerging and established writers, and work from exciting new writers from further afield, Issue Eight of Extra Teeth showcases features genre-defying fiction and nonfiction, all captured in its strange and brilliant glory by illustrator Yannick Scott.

Christina Riley Author

Christina Riley was born in Florida and grew up in Ayrshire on Scotland’s west coast, where she now resides. With a focus on coastal waters, her work draws attention to small details — a particular species, object or place — to shift perspectives and encourage new ways of seeing and experiencing our surroundings, natural and otherwise. Longlisted for Canongate’s Nan Shepherd Prize for Nature Writing, her first photobook, The Beach Today, was published by Guillemot Press in 2021. In 2019 she started The Nature Library, a travelling library exploring the role of literature in times of climate crisis, which opened a long-term premises in 2024.

Gabrielle Tse Author

Gabrielle Tse is a Hong Kong-born writer of poetry and short stories, currently based in Edinburgh, where she is studying comparative literature. Her creative work has been published in Interpret Magazine, The Hong Kong Review, Outcrop Poetry, and elsewhere.

Victoria MacKenzie Author

Victoria Mackenzie is a fiction writer and poet based in Fife. Her debut novel, For Thy Great Pain Have Mercy On My Little Pain (Bloomsbury, 2023), explores the lives of the medieval mystics Julian of Norwich and Margery Kempe, and was a Guardian Book of the Day and a Times Book of the Month. She has won a Scottish Book Trust New Writers Award and the Bridge Award for an Emerging Writer, and has held writing residencies in Scotland, Finland and Australia. Her second novel, Brantwood, about Victorian art critic John Ruskin, will be published by Bloomsbury in 2025.

Wheelchair Access

We have a ramp at the front of the shop which has a ratio of 1:10 and loading capacity of 300kg, and so should be able to be used by most wheelchair users or those with mobility vehicles. The front doors are fully automated. Our shop interior is designed to allow access throughout for wheelchair users and prams, though please note there is only 700mm wide clearance to access the staff toilet.

Sound

We use a PA system to enhance the audio at our live events. We also have a hearing loop system installed, if you’d like to use our loop system during an event please let us know and we’ll make sure we have it set up and connected to the live audio feed during the event. If you wish to attend an event and require BSL interpretation, please give us a few weeks notice and we’ll do our best to arrange an interpreter.
