For more than fifteen years, Gutter magazine has published and promoted the very best writing from Scotland and beyond. Each issue contains a wealth of fabulous work, from new poets to prize-winning novelists.
We’re delighted to be hosting the launch of Issue 32 of the magazine here in the bookshop, with readings from contributors Sasha de Buyl, Iona Lee, Chitra Ramaswamy and Cameron Wilson.
We'll also have Gutter’s managing editor Malachy Tallack and production managaer Cal Bannerman on hosting duties.
This event will take place in the bookshop with an in-person audience, as well as a livestream for attendees watching from home.
In-person vouchers can be redeemed on the night of the event against a single copy of Gutter Issue 32 – we will have a list of attendees with vouchers to be redeemed. Please note that only one voucher can be redeemed per book. Livestream vouchers are valid until the day after the event and can be redeemed on our website against a single copy of Gutter Issue 32.

Sasha de Buyl Author
Sasha de Buyl is a writer and programmer from Cork. Their writing has been published in The Stinging Fly, Belfield Literary Review and Gutter, among others. Most recently, they were Programme Director for International Literature Festival Dublin and in 2023 acted as Guest Curator for StAnza, Scotland's International Poetry Festival. From 2019 - 2022, they were the Director of Cúirt International Festival of Literature in Galway, Ireland. They are currently undertaking a DFA in Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow.
Iona Lee Author
Iona Lee is a poet, artist, and performer from Edinburgh. She has been a prominent member of Scotland’s live poetry scene for over a decade, appearing on radio and television and performing her work in venues and on festival stages all over the UK and Europe. Her critically acclaimed debut collection, Anamnesis, was published by Polygon in 2023.
Her work is concerned with themes of folklore, philosophy, magic, media, truth and tale-telling, art and artifice, memory, and other hauntings.
Chitra Ramaswamy Author
Chitra Ramaswamy is a journalist and author from London. Her latest book, Homelands: The History of a Friendship (Canongate) is a work of creative non-fiction exploring her friendship with a 99-year-old German Jewish refugee called Henry Wuga. It won the Saltire Non-Fiction Book of the Year and was included in The Guardian’s top memoirs and biographies of 2022. Her first book, Expecting: The Inner Life of Pregnancy (Saraband) won the Saltire First Book of the Year Award and was shortlisted for the Polari Prize. She has contributed essays to Antlers of Water, Nasty Women, The Freedom Papers, The Bi:ble, and Message From The Skies and recently completed a commission from the Alasdair Gray Archive. She is a freelance writer for The Guardian, the restaurant critic for The Times Scotland, and broadcasts for BBC radio. She lives in Edinburgh with her partner, two children, and rescue dog.
Cameron Wilson Author
Cameron Wilson is a Glaswegian poet, artist and librarian, writing in English, Scots and Scottish Gaelic. Cameron is Gutter’s Gaelic editor.
Malachy Tallack Chair
Malachy Tallack is one of the most exciting and critically acclaimed writers to emerge from Scotland in the past decade, and has won praise from Robert Macfarlane, Bernard MacLaverty, Sara Baume, Madeleine Bunting, Will Self and John Burnside, among others. He was shortlisted for the Saltire First Book Award for 60 Degrees North; The Un-Discovered Islands was named Illustrated Book of the Year at the Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards 2016; and The Valley at the Centre of the World was shortlisted for the Highland Book Prize and longlisted for the RSL Ondaatje Prize.
Cal Bannerman Chair
Cal Bannerman is a freelance writer, editor, and audiobook producer from Hawick in the Scottish Borders. Their writing is published in Extra Teeth, Gutter, New Maps, The Interpreter’s House, and Reflex Fiction. Having spent a decade as a bookseller and sales rep for Birlinn, their connection to Scotland’s literary scene continues as a production manager and editor-at-large for both Gutter and Extra Teeth. Cal is currently working on the completion of their first full-length manuscript, Porcelain—a body-hopping novel about death—and a poetry collection inspired by nature, love, and travel. They live and work in Glasgow.

Wheelchair Access
We have a ramp at the front of the shop which has a ratio of 1:10 and loading capacity of 300kg, and so should be able to be used by most wheelchair users or those with mobility vehicles. The front doors are fully automated. Our shop interior is designed to allow access throughout for wheelchair users and prams, though please note there is only 700mm wide clearance to access the staff toilet.
Sound
We use a PA system to enhance the audio at our live events. We also have a hearing loop system installed, if you’d like to use our loop system during an event please let us know and we’ll make sure we have it set up and connected to the live audio feed during the event. If you wish to attend an event and require BSL interpretation, please give us a few weeks notice and we’ll do our best to arrange an interpreter.
