Mollie Ray – Giant at The Portobello Bookshop

We're delighted to welcome Mollie Ray to the bookshop to discuss her debut graphic novel, Giant. This exquisite graphic novel from the Edinburgh College of Art graduate follows a teenage boy who one day wakes up to realise he has grown to the size of a giant, exploring themes of family, empathy and hope. Mollie Ray will be in conversation with Will McPhail, New Yorker cartoonist and author of the graphic novel In and collection of cartoons Love & Vermin.

This event will take place in the bookshop with an in-person audience. There will be a signing after the event.

In-person vouchers can be redeemed on the night of the event against a single copy of Giant – we will have a list of attendees with vouchers to be redeemed. Please note that only one voucher can be redeemed per book.

About Giant:

‘Wonderful, moving, original book. It teaches us a new visual language for love, for worry and for family.’ ROBERT MACFARLANE

The captivating and affecting graphic novel debut of a major new talent.

One morning, a teenage boy wakes to find that he has grown to the size of a giant. Inspired by the journey of the author’s younger brother, this wordless wonder of a book follows the experience of a family as one of their own faces a life-threatening illness. As his health declines, can the family remain resilient on his long journey through treatment?

Deeply moving and tender, with gorgeous illustrations, Mollie Ray’s debut graphic novel is a resonant story of empathy, healing and hope.

‘Mollie Ray’s exquisitely rendered drawings guide us tenderly through this tale of family, courage, fear and joy.’ KATIE GREEN

‘Sumptuous [and] intriguing.’ BROKEN FRONTIER

Please note: Tickets for our events are non-refundable. Professional photography and videography may take place during this event. Thank you for your understanding.
