Welsh Writers Showcase with Gutter and Folding Rock at The Portobello Bookshop

For this event, a collaboration between Scottish and Welsh literary magazines, Gutter and Folding Rock, we are delighted to welcome three outstanding authors from Wales to the bookshop.

Rhian Elizabeth, Brigid Lowe, and Anthony Shapland will be reading from recent work, discussing the current state of Welsh writing, and considering kinship with the literary scene here in Scotland.

The event will be introduced by Kathryn Tann, Non-Fiction and Managing Editor of Folding Rock. Kathryn Tann is a writer, editor and creative producer from the south coast of Wales. Her debut essay collection, Seaglass, was published by Calon Books in 2024. She is the creator of ’This Place’ podcast, and writes a monthly Substack called ‘Dwell’.

About the Authors:

Rhian Elizabeth is a novelist, poet, and trainee counsellor. She is the author of three poetry collections, and in 2025 she won both the Wales Book of the Year Award and the Nation.Cymru People’s Choice Award for girls etc., published by Broken Sleep Books.

Brigid Lowe grew up in a Welsh-speaking community in Ynys Môn. Her debut novel, The Bloody Brach, was published in January 2026, and her swimming memoir, Shiver, which won the Giles St Aubyn Award for Non-Fiction, is out in September. Brigid now lives in Scotland.

Anthony Shapland is a writer and artist and founder of g39, an artist-led space in Cardiff. His debut novel, A Room Above a Shop, was published by Granta, and he was one of the Observer’s 10 debut novelists of 2025. His fiction ‘Feathertongue' was recently broadcast by BBC Radio 4.

Wheelchair Access

We have a ramp at the front of the shop which has a ratio of 1:10 and loading capacity of 300kg, and so should be able to be used by most wheelchair users or those with mobility vehicles. The front doors are fully automated. Our shop interior is designed to allow access throughout for wheelchair users and prams, though please note there is only 700mm wide clearance to access the staff toilet.

Sound

We use a PA system to enhance the audio at our live events. We also have a hearing loop system installed, if you’d like to use our loop system during an event please let us know and we’ll make sure we have it set up and connected to the live audio feed during the event. If you wish to attend an event and require BSL interpretation, please give us a few weeks notice and we’ll do our best to arrange an interpreter.
