Some cycles are inevitable: day turns to night, winter to spring, and hardbacks disappear to make room for paperbacks. The variety for March and April is the most notable thing, closely followed by how many new release paperbacks are already firm favourites among our staff. Both Ali Smith’s Companion piece and Emily St. John Mandel’s Sea of Tranquility claimed the hearts of many of our booksellers, and together the two books dominated our 2022 gift guide: some of us - Niamh! - had both on their lists. Elsewhere, Jack is a huge proponent of Eula Biss’s Having and Being Had, a probing collection of essays on class and capitalism; Subscriptions Manager Beth loves Eloghosa Osunde’s Vagabonds!; Douglas Stuart’s Young Mungo is lodged in Kira’s affections; Helena has been singing the praises of Irene Sola’s When I Sing, Mountains Dance; Alice talks rapturously about Pajtim Statotvci’s Bolla; and Marc is itching to pick up Anne Carson’s Eros the Bittersweet and Katherine Rundell’s Super-Infinite
