Bookseller


Pay: £12.75 per hour (We’re an accredited real Living Wage employer and currently all of our employees are paid above the Real Living Wage.).

Hours: This is a flexible hours position for 22.5 – 30 hours p/w (3-4 days).You will be required to work 1 weekend day each week (either Saturday or Sunday), and some shifts will cover evening events.

The role:

We’re looking for a hardworking and motivated individual to join our team of booksellers on a part-time basis! We’re looking for someone with a love of books and an eye for detail, someone who takes pride in keeping bookshelves tidy and who has a warm and friendly approach to customer service.

This role will also entail processing orders that come in from our website meaning that the ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, analytical and able to process orders efficiently.

Good communication and the ability to work well within a small team are also key aspects of this role.


Roles & responsibilities:

  • Helping customers on the shop floor, over the phone and via email
  • Booking in and shelving stock, tidying shelves, merchandising
  • Helping at events
  • General upkeep of the bookshop including cleaning, dusting shelves, etc.
  • Writing book recommendations for the shop floor, website and newsletter - and giving book recommendations in person to customers!
  • Assisting the website co-ordinator in processing orders from our website

Key requirements:

  • Previous experience in customer facing roles e.g. retail, hospitality or service industry
  • Positive and outgoing manner when dealing with customers
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Keen interest in books and in independent bookselling
  • Ability to work well in a small team and to think proactively about ways to engage with and support colleagues, sense of initiative
  • Excellent writing skills – all staff are involved in writing about books as well as responding to customer inquiries in writing
  • At ease with Google Drive and social media platforms
  • Ability to work well during busy periods such as Christmas, when all of the team are required to work across many aspects of the shop

Desirable experience:

  • Some experience working in a bookshop and with stock management software
  • Experience working with e-commerce platforms
  • Experience with social media platforms
  • Illustration / design abilities (InDesign, Photoshop, etc.)

Points to note:

  • The job entails lifting boxes of books and other items, as well as tables and chairs during events prep
