The Associations of Classical Athens cover

Jones' book examines the associations of ancient Athens under the classical democracy (508/7-321 BC) in light of their relations to the central government. Associations of all types--village communities, cultic groups, brotherhoods, sacerdotal families, philosophical schools, and others--emerge as fundamentally similar instances of Aristolian koinoniai. Each, it is argued, acquired its distinctive character in response to particular features of the contemporary democracy. The analysis results in the first integrated, holistic institutional reconstruction of Greece's first city.

Specialists in the constitutional and social history of Athens will find much of value in this book * The Classical Outlook *
The author displays an impressive command of modern scholarship in German, French, and English, as well as the ancient historical and epigraphical record. He makes good use of the orators and comedy. The appendices are useful; sources and topics are well indexed. * The Classical Outlook *
The tone is scrupulously sober. Yet the reader lifts his head from the text to find that his painstaking progress has brought him far from the familiar world of classical Athens to stand, with a wild surmise, silent upon a peak in Darien. * Mark Golden, Journal of Hellenic Studies *
J.'s interpretation of ancient texts is uniformly interesting and strong ... The strength of his book is in the details ... The book deserves to be widely consulted. * Charles W. Hedrick, JR, Classical Rev., 2000. *
