Switchboard Operators

This is a collection of short stories based around a switchboard, by the winner of the 1989 "Guardian" fiction prize. They describe the days in the 1960s when telephone operators saved marriages. On Saturday afternoons, when the Exchange hooks up with the Army barracks, romance snaps through the wires.
