Bristol Times Revisited

Bristol Times is a collection of some of the most remarkable articles drawn from the first year of the Bristol Times supplement of the Bristol Evening Post. Informative and entertaining, each extract recalls an aspect of the city’s lively, and sometimes turbulent, history. From tales of fairs, workhouses, riots and gaols, to accounts of star appearances at the Hippodrome, the success of a deep-rooted Bristol industry, Fry’s chocolate factory, and theories of how the River Frome acquired the nickname ‘Danny’, each piece provides an intriguing insight into Bristol’s past.

Also recalled are the amazing lives of some famous, and infamous, Bristolians, including William Wocestre who meticulously measured medieval Bristol by the length of his steps, and the legendary bare-knuckle fighter Tom Cribb, known locally as ‘The Black Diamond’.
