The book is useful for those students on Teacher Training courses because of its broad range of relevant topics that are dealt with in an acessible fashion. The topics are dealt with informatively and laid out in a student friendly manner. It is a very useful book that covers all the vital aspects of teaching that are essential to all new teachers. Susan Wallace writes in an informative but conversational style that proves to so many in the learning business to be easily read and digested. It is structured well with clear signposting and that variety of presentation that makes a flick through appealing soon delving into another section in more depth. I love the approach, consistent troughout the text, of personal/professional development through reflecting on experience. I also like the concise, plain English passages which provide the core information needed - E.g. Theories of learning, local and national context. Not really a stretch for my top end DTLLS - its too much for PTLLS and not quite Level 5 for DTLLS YR2
Overall though, it could become a core text....but there are so many LM publications (and many of those are Wallace!) out there already that we are beginning to get a huge amount of repetition. Sue’s take on teaching is very accessible to our new/inexperienced tutors and they are finding it very helpful. Especially helpful are the introductions to reflective practice – most relevant to the newest suite of teacher trainer quals., and the learning theories section which offers very clear, concise summaries – something I probably don’t always manage in class! Personally I enjoy that the book emphasises professional conduct, collegiality and inclusivity, all strong themes to our programmes too. Effective and clear mapping to standards. Updated as a result I have confidence in the material. Scenarios add interest and show the point. I noted particularly for use examples/scenarios on pages 28/29 and 40/41 there is some good ′unpacking′ of these scenarios. The previous edition was on reading list and thus the updated version will be. I consider it a core text for the trainee teacher in FE/Post compulsory education. We use specific parts of the book in teaching sessions and as guided reading it is useful and relevant and up to date
