It’s 2050 and every household has an AI assistant. Araya is sent to help Ethan, a writer in a time where writing is a dying profession. When his wife is seriously injured in a car crash, doctors offer one hope - an experimental transference of her memories into a virtual system. Zara, though, is pregnant and the baby isn’t Ethan’s. He needs access to her most secret memories to discover the truth. Araya is a gripping, speculative exploration of the near future and its new moralities.
One of the best things I’ve read in the cyberthriller genre in recent years. On the surface it’s fast paced, tense action with that classic tech induced unease, but underneath there are layers upon layers. The characters who seem straightforward at first slowly turn 180 degrees with every chapter – no one is who they appear to be, and the most likeable people can end up revealing the most unusual motives. The ending leaves you with the uneasy realization that you couldn’t really trust anyone from page one. Brilliantly written, intelligent, and it doesn’t forgive the reader for being naive. Highly recommended.
