Nothing, though, felt as original or resonant as I Will Haunt This, by Viviane Schwarz and illustrated by The Observer’s political cartoonist Chris Riddell (Walker Books, £8.99, published 24 September). The story centres on a ghost who finds itself without anything to haunt. In its search for something new, it makes an unlikely friend in a little girl who that day has struggled to draw something and, in frustration, has scratched and scribbled it out.
