Wonderland cover

A literary exploration of the creative force of lies to reshape reality.

A haunting exploration of the power of lies as a creative force that reshapes reality.

From the author of Caesaria comes Wonderland, a spellbinding study of the many faces of deception. A novel that, with clear prose, depicts a chameleon-like existence where truth and lies are never easily separated. It follows three different characters, wandering an ominous contemporary world saturated with abandonment and false mirrors. On the Pacific Coast, a homeless woman travels between cities and towns pretending to be a child. At a hotel in Athens, two rival Catalan journalists become entangled in a risky game of fact and fiction. And in a luxury villa in Southern Sweden, a housewife chooses to lie at the expense of others in order to maintain the only life she can tolerate living. Around them appears a hall of mirrors inhabited by a range of unreliable characters: bluffing children, doped up martial artists, ghostwriters, dishonest politicians, ecocriminals, and fashionable jetsetters so disfigured by plastic surgery that there seems to be nothing left of their original selves. All of them individuals trying to find their way in that slippery world of post-truth that we've gotten to know as our own.

"Nordenhök's locked up mansion is a disciplinary system of supervision and punishment, a claustrophobic spectacle where death and disaster are indisputable components in the condition of being a girl. Caesaria is simply wonderful!" Johanne Lykke Holm, author of Strega

"I was astounded by Caesaria. It's such a captivating immersive read, like falling down a rabbit hole of shifting impressions, small revelations and the unravelling of time itself. I've never read anything quite like this. Every sentence is a poem. The language is both furious and careful. The characters are grotesque and gorgeous. It's a hall of mirrors bound up in a book." Jan Carson, author of The Raptures and Quickly, While They Still Have Horses

"A novel as beautiful as it is unsettling. Hanna Nordenhök’s prose combines with singular mastery the density of poetry with the feverish atmosphere of a gothic tale." Fernanda Melchor, author of Hurricane Season and Paradis

"In Wonderland lie and truth are sinisterly intertwined. Written in a daring, brutal and masterly elaborated prose, it exposes our contemporary humanity in all its beauty and monstrousness." Johanne Lykke Holm, author of Strega

"Hypnotic and unsettling, Hanna Nordenhök has penned a fever dream of late capitalism and deception. Razor-sharp and dreamlike, Wonderland *is a novel about the masks we wear to survive the modern world. It’s impossible to shake." Lucy Rose, author of The Lamb
