Debbie Shore's Sewing Room Secrets: Quilting cover

Jam-packed with hands-on, practical advice, and with gorgeous projects to practise the skills you learn, Debbie will teach you everything you need to know about quilting.

Whether you are at the start of your sewing journey or are already an experienced quilter, you’ll be inspired by Debbie’s friendly and easy-to-follow approach to useful quilting techniques. Beginning with a section on quilting essentials she’ll guide you around your sewing machine and explains all the tools and materials you might need.

The second section then introduces you to the key quilting techniques you’ll need to know: discover patchwork favourites such as disappearing nine patch and English paper piecing, different quilting styles, sashing, binding and more — each explained clearly with stitched samples or illustrated step by steps. Projects then follow a single or selection of core quilting skills, so you can put your new knowledge into practice.

This is the ideal book for those new to quilting, looking for in-depth and helpful guidance, or for the more experienced quilter looking to brush up on their skills.

Another book filled with “top tips and techniques for successful sewing”, this time for quilting. I was instantly intrigued, because this is a book for beginners and improvers, and I haven’t done much quilting and want to learn more.

Both patchwork and quilting techniques are covered in here, and the book starts off with what you need, plus a staged guide to various techniques. These include what stitches to use, making up the quilt “sandwich”, and learning about different types of batting and machine feet and caring for quilted items. Interspersed between these chapters are ten projects for quilts of various sizes as well as a table runner, Christmas stocking, placemat and of course bags. Plenty of photographs and lots of handy tips make this a pretty foolproof way to learn these techniques, making what often seems a rather arcane and complex craft seem doable and fun.

You can learn traditional methods such as English paper piecing, trapunto and reverse quilting as well as making use of modern innovations such as bag hardware. Stitch using a machine or by hand and use up leftovers from other projects making smaller projects such as a pillowcase or lap quilt. Armed with my new knowledge, I now feel ready to have another go at patchwork and quilting. Another winning title by the talented Ms Shore.

As always with Debbie Shore, this book is simple to understand and has great projects. This time she is talking quilting, with tips and techniques from the beginning to the end of your quilting project.

There are several projects, bags, table runners and of course a traditional quilt. You can use your scrap fabric for the smaller designs, but the 'Humbug Hexie Quilt', which is the last project, really does cry out for something special. It is beautiful.

The book begins with advice on tools, threads and fabric and continues with 'how to' on stashing, binding and sandwiching your projects. Each project features a written guide accompanied by step-by-step photography in full glossy colour. There are full-sized templates included to help you and I guarantee that your project will have a professional and beautiful finish.

I always recommend Debbie Shore, she is a perfect teacher for the beginner but also, the advanced stitcher will be able to use her expertise to revisit long forgotten techniques.
